Now thats an Altar

I just had to post Piranesi's concept design for a new Altar at the Basilica of St John Lateran in Rome. There are no accurate dates but I do believe it would have been 1763, when he was commissioned to do a makeover of St John Lateran by Pope Clement XIII. Gothicists eat your heart out!! lol

Now that truly is an altar!

I wish that today they'd take the time to build something as beautiful. Many priests complain that a lot of people are abandoning their faith. Is it not because they find it hard to find or notice the presence of God in this technology and pleasure filled world. Until recently churches were built to remind the people of the closeness of God, eg depictions of angels peering in on us through the clouds. And how many magnificent churches are now tourist attractions? And how many brides today wish to be married in a magnificent church? You cannot tell me that people do not wish for such beautiful churches to be built today!!!
How hideous are some of the churches today?!
